Antique “Pickers”

Antique “Pickers”

Look what treasures I found on the way to the cabin this week. We stopped at an “antique / junk” place along the road and made them an offer on a neat little pile of “stuff”.

Among other treasures, I got a huge CocaCola “button” sign to hang on the barn …….

Gourd House

Gourd House

Purple Martins love to nest in a large gourd. The practice was begun by Native Americans and continues today.

The Purple Martin is a very beautiful friendly native bird found in the Eastern half of the U.S. who is being decimated by the introduction of the European pests Starlings and English House Sparrows. The Martin loves to live near humans and is indeed now dependent on humans to help provide nesting places. Its beautiful song and a graceful acrobatic flight make it a favorite to watch.

This weekend, Mike built a hanging gourd “village” in hopes of attracting some Martins to nest here.

Building a Stone Walkway

Building a Stone Walkway

Last weekend Mike excavated a pathway, and this weekend we worked together to lay the stones. Now we have a pretty little stone walkway from the driveway to the cabin porch.

UPDATE: SUMMER 2011

Later we added pea rock over the sand to keep it from washing away. Now time has weathered it all to a more mellow, older look.
